For several years, the prevalence of disseminating false information through Bangladesh’s media has been a highly discussed issue. As part of their responsibility, fact-checking organizations like Rumor Scanner are diligently verifying the accuracy of news published on the Facebook pages, YouTube channels, and websites of national media outlets.
In a gripping series of events, during the first six months of 2023 (from January to June), Rumor Scanner has exposed a total of 1,427 reports from 176 media outlets in Bangladesh, marking them as misinformation. Among the 179 subjects covered, 98 were outright false, 77 were misleading, 01 was partially false, 01 was mostly false, 01 was satire, and 01 was distorted information, all of which were presented as true by the media.
Here it is worth mentioning that on April 15 of the current year, Rumor Scanner published statistics on false news in the first three months of this year from the media. Following that publication, Rumor Scanner has identified eight more false news items in the first three months and published fact-check reports. These eight fact-checked falsehoods have been integrated with the statistics for the first six months, presenting a comprehensive picture.
