An image showing the body of a woman lying on the edge of a paddy field has been shared with the claim that she was Upama Roy from Mymensingh, Bangladesh, who was lured by a Muslim man, converted to Islam, took the name Salma Akhtar, and married him. The posts further claimed that her body was later found and described the incident as a result of conversion.

Fact-Check

Rumor Scanner’s investigation found that the claim associated with the photo is untrue. The woman’s name was Hosne Ara Akter, daughter of Abdul Gani and Rabeya Khatun. She was a born Muslim and a divorced woman with mental health issues. Therefore, the claim that she was Upama Roy who converted to Islam after being lured by a Muslim boy is false.

While investigating the claim and the photo, we found a Facebook post by a user named Firoz Shai, dated July 2, which included two photos of the woman. The post identified her as Hosne Ara Begum.

We also found a report-like video post showing the mother of the murder victim crying and wailing. The post mentioned that the deceased woman was the daughter of Abdul Goni.

Later, we found several reports on the incident. The reports stated: “In Gauripur, Mymensingh, a woman named Hosne Ara Khatun (35) was allegedly strangled to death. On July 2, police recovered her body from a taro field in the Kaulatia Kabirajbari area of Bokainagar Union in the upazila. She was the daughter of the late Abdul Gani of the same village. The incident was confirmed by Gauripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Didarul Islam.

He stated that it is suspected she was strangled to death using a banana plant stalk. Preparations are underway to file a case over the incident. The victim’s mother, Rabeya Khatun, said her daughter left the house around 3 p.m. She had mental health issues. ‘I do not know why she was killed in this way. I want justice for her death,’ she said.”

Therefore, the narrative and claims being circulated with the photo are false. The woman was not Upama Roy, nor had she converted to Islam and taken the name Salma Akhtar. She was Hosne Ara, a Muslim by birth.
