Recently, a video is being circulated on social media claiming to show “a Shia-Sunni clash in Bangladesh over a shrine.”
You can see the X posts making the claim here (archived) and here (archived).
Fact-Check
Rumor Scanner’s investigation revealed that the circulated video does not depict a recent clash in Bangladesh between Shia and Sunni followers over a shrine. Instead, the footage is from a three-way clash between BNP, Jamaat, and Islami Andolan over VGF rice distribution that took place this March in Monpura, Bhola. This footage is now being used to support the misleading claim.
During the investigation, a video posted on March 23rd from a Facebook account named ‘Amirul Islam Afnan’ was found. The footage in that post matches the one used in the misleading claim.

Further details are available in a report published on March 23rd on the website of The Business Standard, titled “8 injured in three-way clash between BNP, Jamaat, Islami Andolan over VGF rice distribution in Bhola”. According to the report, a three-way clash broke out in Monpura, Bhola over the distribution of VGF rice, involving Islami Andolan, BNP, and Jamaat-e-Islami. At least 8 to 10 people were injured in the incident.
In addition, Bangladeshi mainstream electronic media outlet Channel i also published a video report on the March 23rd clash in Monpura, Bhola. Watch here.
Conclusion
The video filmed during the three-way clash over VGF rice distribution is being falsely presented on social media as a recent Shia-Sunni conflict over a shrine in Bangladesh. This claim is false.
