Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the circulated video is not from India. In reality, a video of the recent rebellion in Nepal has been shared with the false claim of it being a protest in India.

Through a reverse image search of several keyframes from the viral video, a video was found on an X account named ‘Mukund Shahi’, posted on September 11. This video matches the one being circulated with the false claim.

The video’s description indicates that it shows the devastated state of Jajarkot during the recent protests in Nepal.

Following this lead, a relevant keyword search led to a report published on the website of the Serbian news outlet ‘Glas Javnosti’ on September 11. The feature image in this report matches scenes from the viral video.

The detailed description in the report explains that an anti-corruption protest in Nepal, sparked by a social media ban, turned violent, leading to loss of life and the escape of thousands of prisoners from jail. Under pressure from the situation, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned, and the army took control by imposing a curfew in the capital. The video in question is from this event.

Notably, Sushila Karki has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government and has already begun the work of forming a new cabinet. The newly appointed Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, has stated that she will not remain in office for more than six months and will hand over power to the government formed after the country’s national elections on March 5 of the next year.

Therefore, a video of clashes between protesters and police in Nepal has been shared with the false claim that it shows a recent protest in India; which is false.
