Fact-check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the circulated photo is not from this past August 15th; rather, it is a photo of Mamata Banerjee paying floral tribute on March 17, 2020, on the occasion of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary.

At the beginning of the investigation, a reverse image search of the photo led to a post published on Mamata Banerjee’s Facebook page on March 17, 2020. The first picture attached to that post is an exact match to the photo being circulated with the claim.

The caption of the said post states, “On the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, today (March 17, 2020) in the Legislative Assembly, in the presence of the respected Speaker and legislators, we remembered him with reverence. This undisputed leader, who fought for his mother tongue and motherland, remains an inspiration to the nation even today.”

Subsequently, a relevant keyword search on the matter led to a report published on the website of the online news media outlet Bangla News 24.com on March 17, 2020, titled ‘Mamata’s tribute on Bangabandhu’s birth centenary’. The same information was found in that report.

Therefore, the incident of Mamata Banerjee paying floral tribute on March 17, 2020, for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary is being circulated with the claim that it happened this past August 15th; which is misleading.
