Video of AL Muslim Woman Leader Falsely Shared as Attack on Hindu Woman in Bangladesh

A video has recently been circulated on social media, claiming that a Hindu woman was tortured in Bangladesh.

Several accounts shared the video with the caption, “Condition of Hindu women in Bangladesh.”

Some posts making the same claim can be seen here, here, here, here, and here.

Fact-check

Rumor Scanner’s investigation confirmed that the woman in the video is Muslim. Therefore, the claim that she is a Hindu woman and that the video depicts the condition of Hindu women in Bangladesh is false.

While investigating, we found a Facebook post with another video of the same woman from the same place. The caption reads, “Jubo Mohila League leader Labony Chowdhury was caught by the public and handed over to the police after being attacked and tortured.”

The video was also posted by the official Facebook page of Bangladesh Awami League, where the same name was mentioned. A report of Kaler Kantho also mentioned her name as Mst. Labony Chowdhury.

Comparison by Rumor Scanner

According to a report of Dhaka Tribune, “Three individuals, including a female Jubo Mohila League leader, were detained from a procession of Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi 27 area. On Friday evening, a group of 25 to 30 people marched on the main road, leading locals to chase and capture three individuals. They were beaten before being handed over to the police. The detained individuals are Laboni, 35, a central member of Jubo Mohila League, and local Awami League activists Sirajul, 45, and Raju, 30, confirmed by Tejgaon Division’s ADC Jewel Rana.”

The report includes a photo of the detainees, and the woman is seen wearing the same dress as in the video. Later, we found her Facebook accounts named Labony Chowdhury and লাবনী চৌধুরী, where we found a photo of a ‘duty pass’ with her name written as Mst. Labony Chowdhury in Bangla. She is a member of the Bangladesh Jubo Mohila League, the women’s youth wing of the Bangladesh Awami League.

Hence, the woman in the video is a Muslim, making the claim that the video depicts the condition of a Hindu woman in Bangladesh, along with the assertion that she is Hindu and the video being spread as a communal attack on a Hindu woman, completely false.
