Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the circulated video is not a recent incident of violence against women in Bangladesh. In reality, the video shows an incident of violence against a woman in Cambodia’s Ratanakiri province, which has been falsely shared as if it took place in Bangladesh.

An investigation into the video found that the same footage was published on March 31 by a Facebook page named សោម វីរ៉ា ធីវីញូស៍ Som Vira TVnews.

According to the title of the video, it was recorded in the village of Paor Toch in Kachang Commune, located in the Borey O district of Ratanakiri province. The title also mentions that the man seen abusing the woman in the video is her husband. A keyword search confirms that Ratanakiri is a province in the northeastern region of Cambodia.

Later, a post made on April 1 was found on the Facebook page of a journalist named យោ ចាន់ ធូ (Yoeun Chan Tho).

The post reveals that the man who abused his wife is named Ting Chun, and he has been arrested by the police in connection with the incident. It also states that the woman who was subjected to the abuse has been admitted to the Kachang Commune Health Center for treatment. The post includes not only the widely circulated video but also a photo of the arrested perpetrator.

Additional confirmation comes from a report published on April 2 by the Cambodian news outlet Khmer Times, titled “Man, who brutally attacked his wife and child, arrested”. The report also mentions that the man was intoxicated at the time of the assault.

Conclusion

A video of domestic violence from Cambodia is being falsely circulated as a recent incident of violence against women in Bangladesh. This claim is false.
