Fact-check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the information circulated with the claim of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation is not true. Additionally, no information was found about any major recent protests in New Delhi following the protests in Nepal. The claim that Narendra Modi was harassed by protesters was also not substantiated. In reality, the claims in question have been circulated without any evidence and are entirely baseless.

At the beginning of the investigation, a keyword search did not yield any information from the media or any other reliable sources about such a protest in India’s capital, New Delhi, in recent times. However, information was found about a protest by job aspirants in Patna, the capital of Bihar state, regarding the fourth phase of the Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE-4). But there was no information to suggest that any incident of Narendra Modi being harassed occurred there.

The video in question claimed that Narendra Modi’s resignation was broadcast live on Indian media. However, Rumor Scanner’s investigation did not find any such video on any Indian media outlet. There was also no information from any of the country’s media or other reliable sources about Narendra Modi’s resignation. On the contrary, according to Indian media on September 21, at 5 PM, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Goods and Services Tax or GST 2.0 outreach program. The same information was also found on Narendra Modi’s YouTube channel. This confirms that the claim of Narendra Modi’s resignation is not true.

Furthermore, an investigation into the image used in the thumbnail of the viral video, which purports to show Narendra Modi being beaten, revealed that the image is actually of an assault on Nurul Haq Nur, the president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad. Modi’s face was digitally added to the image in place of Nur’s and used in the video circulated with the claim.
