False communal claim in Jony Sorkar murder

Recently, various claims have circulated on social media regarding the murder of a Hindu youth. On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), a photo of the youth and a video showing his body stuffed in a sack were shared, accompanied by the claim that—Bangladeshi Hindu youth Jony Sorkar was killed by Islamists, who then stuffed his body in a sack and dumped it in a drain. Several Facebook posts also claimed that two Muslim youths lured him from his home and murdered him.

Some of these posts shared on Facebook and X can be found here, here, here, here, and here.

Fact Check

The Rumor Scanner Team’s investigation revealed that the claim that Muslims killed Jony Sorkar is false. In reality, fed up with their son’s drug addiction and abusive behavior, Jony’s father—with the help of his mother—killed him, stuffed the body in a sack, and dumped it in a drain.

Since the posts mentioned that the victim Jony Sorkar’s current address was Narayanganj and his permanent address was Jamalganj, Sunamganj, reports related to the murder were found in mainstream media based on that information, such as this one published by Prothom Alo.

Additionally, during the investigation, a longer version of the video that had gone viral was found on Facebook, showing a body in a sack, with the caption: “Yesterday in Fatullah’s Dakshin Shiyachar Lalkha area, a young man’s body was found in a sack… The body was recovered from a drain beside the road known as ‘Nobo Rasta’ in front of the Lalkha Advance Garments in Purbho Shiyachar.” The video can be viewed here.

According to a news report published in the media quoting the police press briefing, Jony Sorkar’s parents were involved in his murder.

A report published by BanglaNews24 revealed that the father killed his son because he could no longer endure his drug-addicted son’s abuse, and with help from the mother, they stuffed the body in a sack and dumped it in a drain.

The incident occurred in Fatullah, Narayanganj. The details were shared during a press briefing on Thursday (June 19) by Fatullah Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Shariful Haque.

The victim, Jony Sorkar, was a resident of Jamalganj upazila in Sunamganj. He was the son of Karuna Sorkar, who worked at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Cricket Stadium. Police stated that Jony was a drug addict and would often physically assault his parents.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj ‘K’ Circle, Hasinuzzaman, said that on the night of June 16, Jony again assaulted his parents. After he fell asleep that night, his father struck him on the head and face with a rolling pin used for making bread. When Jony died from the blows, his mother helped to stuff the body into a sack and dump it in a drain.

On the morning of June 17, police recovered Jony’s body from the sack. Although his father initially filed a case against an unknown suspect, the investigation revealed the true circumstances of the murder.

A detailed report of the incident was also published on the official Facebook page of Narayanganj District Police. It stated:
“Under the direction of the honorable Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj District, Mr. Protyush Kumar Majumder, the district detective police and Fatullah police station launched an operation to solve the mystery of the murder and arrest the accused. During the investigation, including collection of CCTV footage, the investigation team of Fatullah Model Police Station confirmed the involvement of the victim’s parents in the murder. They were brought to the police station and, during initial questioning, confessed to the crime. When presented in court, the arrested accused gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, admitting their guilt.”

In other words, police confirmed that Jony Sorkar’s parents were involved in his murder.

The communal claim that Muslim individuals killed Hindu youth Jony Sorkar is false.
