Old Pro-Palestine Rally in Dhaka Falsely Shared as Pakistan Independence Day Event

A video showing the Bangladesh and Pakistan flags side by side has recently been widely shared on X (formerly Twitter) with the claim that Pakistan’s Independence Day was celebrated in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Posts making the same claim can be found here, here, here and here.

Fact-Check

Rumor Scanner’s investigation found that the video does not show Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The footage is actually from April 2025 and depicts Pakistani students studying in Bangladesh participating in a pro-Palestine protest in Dhaka with their flags, alongside Bangladeshi students.

As we were already aware of the video and had seen it before, we were able to find it easily. While investigating, we found a Facebook post by Mohammad Tahir, a Pakistani student studying in Bangladesh, who is also seen in the video holding Pakistani flags from the left side of the flag. The post, dated April 8, showed the same footage. Its caption mentioned that the event was a solidarity protest for Palestine.

Later, we found the original video he posted on the YouTube channel of the Bangladeshi news portal Bangla Edition. The title of the video is: “Students from Bangladesh and Pakistan have united in support of Palestine.”

Students from various educational institutions marched near the Raju Sculpture at Dhaka University on April 7 to protest the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Therefore, the claim that the video shows Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations in Dhaka is false. The footage is from April 2025 and depicts a pro-Palestine protest in Dhaka, where some Pakistani students studying in Bangladesh participated, carrying their national flag.
