Claim of Muslims Kidnapping Oishi Mondal in Nazirpur, Pirojpur is Not True

Recently, a video report broadcast on Desh TV has been circulated on social media with the claim: “This Hindu woman’s underage daughter was abducted at gunpoint by extremist Muslims on her way to school! The administration and police remain silent! Strangely, whenever Israel destroys these extremists, everyone starts talking about humanity!” (Translated)

The video in question claims that Oishi Mondal, a girl from Sriramkathi Union of Nazirpur Upazila in Pirojpur, was abducted through a romantic trap.

Fact-Check

According to the investigation by the Rumor Scanner team, the claim circulating in the video regarding extremist Muslims or communal elements being involved in the kidnapping of Oishi Mondal from Sriramkathi Union of Nazirpur in Pirojpur is incorrect. In reality, Oishi was taken away by her Hindu boyfriend due to romantic reasons, and later he posted a picture with Oishi, showing her wearing Shakha (traditional bangles) and Sindoor (vermilion).

The circulated video report on this matter states that the incident took place in Sriramkathi Union of Nazirpur Upazila, Pirojpur. Oishi Mondal, daughter of Liton Mondal from the mentioned area, was allegedly lured into a romantic relationship by Nayan Shikari, son of Sujit Shikari, who worked as domestic help in their household. On March 2, while Oishi was on her way to school, Nayan, along with some delinquent youths, abducted her and later shared a photo on social media showing Oishi wearing Shakha (traditional bangles) and Sindoor (vermilion). However, the video report did not mention any accused individuals as being Muslim.

Further investigation found the original video posted on Desh Television’s verified Facebook page. The video, titled “Oishi fell into the trap of the domestic worker”, was published on March 17. However, even in this report, the accused were not identified as Muslims.

Using relevant keywords, another report on this incident was found on the website of the news portal ‘Sokaler Khobor24’, published on March 16 under the title “Case filed against youth for abducting and marrying schoolgirl”. This report included an image of the girl with Shankha-Sindoor alongside the accused.

The report states: “Oishi Mondal (15), a tenth-grade science student of Shikdar Mallik Secondary School in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila, was forcibly abducted and married by a young man while she was on her way to school. The incident occurred on March 2 (Sunday) at 10 AM in Chowgacha village of Sriramkathi Union, Nazirpur Upazila, Pirojpur. The girl’s father filed a case against four individuals for abduction. The accused are Nayon Shikari, Sujit Shikari, Chayon Shikari, Ajit Shikari, and three unidentified persons. According to the case and local sources, Nayon Shikari had been working as a day laborer at Oishi’s house for a long time. Over time, Oishi and Nayon developed a romantic relationship. On March 2, Nayon, along with a group of miscreants, abducted Oishi and later posted a picture of her wearing Shankha-Sindoor on social media. Oishi’s mother, Kavita Mondal, stated, ‘My daughter left for school on March 2 as she did every day. Since then, she has been missing. I wait every day, hoping my daughter will return.’”

The same information was corroborated in a report published on March 16 by the online news portal ‘Dhaka Canvas’. The names of the accused confirm that they are followers of the Hindu religion.

To gain further clarity on the matter, the Rumor Scanner team contacted Md. Mahamud Al Farid Bhuiyan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nazirpur Police Station. He confirmed that the claim about Muslims being involved in the kidnapping is incorrect, adding that spreading such misinformation is unfortunate. In reality, the accused individuals belong to the Hindu community, and the incident was related to romantic affairs. Since the girl is underage, a kidnapping case has been filed. However, only after rescuing the girl and recording her statement will it be possible to determine, considering her age. Both the accused and the girl are Hindu. He also expressed confusion about how the issue of Hindu-Muslim conflict arose in this context.

Conclusion

The incident involving Oishi Mondal from Sriramkathi Union of Nazirpur, Pirojpur, who was actually taken by her Hindu boyfriend, was falsely portrayed as an abduction by extremist Muslims, which is misleading.
