False claim of Hindu woman’s murder in Chandpur

Recently, a photocard titled “Attempt to murder Hindu woman by cutting into house through ground in Chandpur” was circulated on social media. Although the photocard mentioned “attempt to murder,” the caption in English claimed that a “46-year-old Bangladeshi Hindu woman [was] killed by Islamists.”

Fact-Check

The Rumor Scanner Team investigated and found that the woman attacked by miscreants in Chandpur was not killed. In fact, she was injured and is now out of danger, according to her son.

Investigating the photocard used in the post, a Facebook post from the page Sanatan TV dated July 10 was found. The caption read: “Attempt to murder a Hindu woman by cutting into house through the ground in Chandpur…” The photocard seen in the circulated claim matched this post, and upon further review of other similar posts by the page, it was confirmed that this was the original source of the photocard.

In the comment section of that post, Sanatan TV also commented: “In Chandpur Sadar upazila, miscreants cut through the ground into a house and critically injured a 46-year-old Hindu woman named Kajol Chakrabarty with a sharp weapon. The brutal incident took place at around 4 AM on Thursday (July 10) in the Vategaon Chhoto Pandit Bari area of Ward 4 in Shahmahmudpur Union. The injured Kajol Chakrabarty is currently undergoing treatment in Dhaka.”

Using this information, a relevant news report from RTV was found, titled “Housewife hacked after intruders break into house,” published on July 10. It stated: “In Chandpur, in the dead of night, intruders broke into the house and severely injured sleeping housewife Kajol Rani Chakrabarty (46) with a sharp weapon. The incident took place on the night of Wednesday (July 9) in the Chhoto Pandit Bari area of Shahmahmudpur Union in Chandpur Sadar upazila. The injured Kajol Rani Chakrabarty is the wife of deceased Krishnapada Chakrabarty. According to her younger son Pradip Chakrabarty and local residents, around 4 AM early Thursday (July 10), miscreants entered the house by cutting a hole and hacked the sleeping housewife on the neck, chest, and hand, then escaped through the same hole under the bed. Locals rescued her in a bloody state and rushed her to Chandpur General Hospital. After initial treatment, doctors referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care.”

In conclusion, there is no credible evidence supporting the claim that Kajol Chakrabarty, the woman attacked in Chandpur, was killed.

Later, the Rumor Scanner Team contacted Mohammad Sohel, the UP Member of Shahmahmudpur Union, who confirmed: “This incident occurred in my ward, and the attacked woman is alive. She has been brought back home.”

Additionally, when the Rumor Scanner Team contacted the injured woman’s son, Pradip Chakrabarty, he confirmed: “Kajol Chakrabarty has been brought home. The doctors have said she is out of danger.”

Therefore, the incident of Kajol Chakrabarty being injured in an attack by miscreants in Chandpur has been falsely promoted as a murder, which is misleading.
