Fact Check: This Video Does Not Show Bangladeshis Destroying Indian Crops

Recently, tensions have escalated along the Bangladesh-India border regarding the construction of barbed wire fences. Efforts by the Border Security Force (BSF) to construct barbed wire fences along the Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, and Maheshpur border regions have led to heightened tensions between the border forces of Bangladesh and India

Republic Bangla, an Indian media outlet, circulated a video on social media platforms claiming that ‘Bangladeshi citizens crossed into India’s Malda Sukdevpur border and damaged agricultural crops under the cover of darkness.

Fact Check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation revealed that the video does not depict Bangladeshi citizens destroying Indian agricultural crops. Instead, the video actually depicts Bangladeshi farmers in Meherpur uprooting their own cauliflower fields in protest against unfair market prices.

To verify the authenticity of the claimed video, the original video was found on Maasranga Television’s Facebook page. On January 1, the page posted it with the caption: “Farmers in Meherpur are destroying cauliflower in their fields due to low market prices.” You can view the original post here.

Upon reviewing the footage, it was evident that farmers in Meherpur, frustrated by plummeting market prices, were uprooting their own cauliflower crops. In interviews featured in the video, the farmers expressed their frustration, stating that they destroyed their crops because they could not receive fair prices.

A more detailed report on this incident was published on Nagorik TV’s Facebook page on January 2. You can watch the report here. This report revealed that the video was filmed in Gangni Upazila of Meherpur district, where farmers were compelled to destroy their crops as each cauliflower was being sold for only 1 Taka.

Additionally, multiple reports published in various media outlets in Bangladesh corroborated the incident of farmers in Meherpur destroying their cauliflower crops due to unfair prices.

Conclusion

Therefore, the video of farmers in Meherpur uprooting their cauliflower crops due to unfair prices was falsely circulated as evidence of Bangladeshis crossing the Indian border to damage Indian crops. The claims made by Republic Bangla about Bangladeshis destroying crops in India are baseless and false.
