The woman in the video is not Hindu, but Muslim

Recently, a video has been circulated on social media with the claim, ‘Clicking one child at 20 different spots does not hide the fact how Hindu women were raped and burnt alive by Jamatis. This video shows the reality of Hindu women under Yunus in #Bangladesh. We will definately show you DURGA on #Dhaka streets.’ In other words, it is claimed that the woman in the circulated video is a Hindu.

Fact-Check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the woman in the circulated video is not a Hindu. In fact, on February 6, during the vandalism of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house at Dhanmondi 32, a woman named Fatema was beaten by an angry mob for lamenting, “Apa’s [the leader’s] house is being vandalized.” This video is from that incident.

Upon investigation, a video published on the YouTube channel of the online media outlet Dhaka Post on February 6 was found. The woman being assaulted in that video matches the woman in the video in question.

Video Comparison By Rumor Scanner

Towards the end of the four-minute and fifteen-second video, the journalist filming it asks for the woman’s identity. The assaulted woman then says her name is Fatema.

Additionally, a photo was found in a report published on the website of the mainstream media outlet Channel i on the same date regarding the incident. The woman in that photo also matches the woman in the circulated video.

At that time, Prothom Alo, Manob Kantho, and Janakantha also published news with the same information and photos.

In other words, the name of the woman who was beaten by the mob is Fatema, which is typically a Muslim name. Furthermore, the woman was assaulted for political reasons.

Therefore, a video of a Muslim woman being assaulted for political reasons is being circulated with the claim that it shows the persecution of a Hindu woman; which is completely false.
