Mahfuz Anam’s video edited for scam

Recently, a video of Mahfuz Anam, the editor of the national English daily The Daily Star, has been circulating with the claim: ‘ONLY 3% OF BANGLADESHIS KNOW ABOUT THIS PLATFORM BY INVESTING JUST 31,000 TAKA, YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO RECEIVE 3,000,000 TAKA EVERY MONTH.’

The logo of Jamuna Television is also visible in the video.

Fact-Check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that Mahfuz Anam made no such comment about receiving 3 million Taka per month by investing just 31,000 Taka, nor is he associated with any such investment company. Furthermore, Jamuna Television did not broadcast any such video featuring Mahfuz Anam. In reality, Mahfuz Anam gave an interview to the Indian media outlet The Print last January. A video from that interview was edited to include the Jamuna Television logo and was then circulated with the misleading claim.

At the beginning of the investigation, based on the Jamuna Television logo in the video, a search of Jamuna Television’s Facebook page, YouTube channel, and website yielded no related videos or information.

Subsequently, a video interview published on January 26 was found on the YouTube channel of the Indian media outlet The Print. In that interview, Mahfuz Anam’s attire, the background, and all other surrounding details match the video in question.

Video Comparison By Rumor Scanner

In the one-hour, nine-minute, and thirty-four-second interview, Mahfuz Anam is never heard discussing investments. Instead, he speaks about geopolitical and diplomatic issues concerning Bangladesh, India, China, and Pakistan.

In other words, a segment of that interview was clipped and edited using digital technology to create the circulated video.

Therefore, the video circulated with the claim of receiving 3 million Taka by investing 31,000 Taka is edited.
