Bangladesh Crime Data Misrepresented as Evidence of Hindu Persecution

A translated screenshot of a Bangla news headline reading “2,616 murders, 15,000 women and children tortured in 8 months: Interim government” has been shared on X with the caption: “In the end, they accepted it – what is happening against Hindus in Bangladesh. #SaveBangladeshiHindus”.

The posts presented the statistics as evidence of Hindu persecution in Bangladesh, framing the figures as specific to the Hindu community.

Fact-Check

Rumor Scanner found that the figures represent nationwide crime statistics and are not specific to any community. The data was deliberately misrepresented as violence against Hindus to push a misleading and harmful narrative.

We found the report published by Independent TV on September 9, 2025, whose headline was translated into English and shared.

The report mentioned: “In the first eight months of this year, 2,616 murders and 15,049 incidents of violence against women and children have been reported, according to the interim government. On Tuesday, the Press Wing of the interim government released a comparative overview of overall crimes committed between 2020 and August 2025.”

The report, citing the Press Wing, also stated: “Although the murder rate in the last 13 months of the interim government may appear higher, this is partly because at least 1,130 murder cases committed during Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule were filed only after the mass uprising—between August 6, 2024, and August of this year. Many murder cases could not be filed earlier due to threats from ruling party terrorists, and the police were also discouraged from registering them. Only after the change of government did these cases come to light and get officially recorded.”

Other media outlets also reported the same. From these reports, it was understood that the crime statistics represented a national aggregate. Later, we found the data published on the official Facebook page of the Interim Government, ‘Chief Adviser GOB’, where it was clearly confirmed that the figures presented a comparative picture of crime based on data from 2020 to August 2025.

Hence, the data was not specific to any community or to Hindus, and no community-based breakdown was included in the statistics.

Therefore, the claim that the figures represent violence against Hindus is misleading.
