The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that no such abduction or assault incident occurred in Naogaon. In reality, the video in question actually shows an incident involving Nirmalendu Das (aka Rana), former General Secretary of Nabiganj Municipal Awami League and current Chairman of Kargaon Union Parishad in Habiganj district, Sylhet.
The source of this was a post on the Facebook account of a man identifying himself as journalist Murad Ahmed (Profile). On May 13, he shared a video titled “Chairman of Kargaon Union Parishad in Nabiganj, Nirmalendu Das Rana, was beaten and handed over to police in Sylhet.” A portion of this video matches the footage shared in the misleading claim.
Using keywords from that Facebook post, a search led to a report published on May 14 on bdnews24.com titled “Public beats up UP chairman in Sylhet and hands him over to police**. The report includes a photo of the assaulted man, which matches the individual in the disputed video frame.
According to that report: “In Sylhet city, a UP chairman and Awami League leader was beaten up by the public and handed over to police. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The incident took place around 9 PM on Tuesday [May 13] in the Rikabi Bazar area. The arrested man is Nirmalendu Das Rana, chairman of Kargaon Union Parishad under Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj. He is also the former General Secretary of Nabiganj Municipal Awami League,” said Mohammad Saiful Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
