Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the circulated video is not from Bangladesh; rather, an incident from Nepal is being shared with a false claim about Bangladesh.

In the course of the investigation, a match was found between the viral video and a video published on a page named Gen Z Nepal on September 9th. According to the video’s description, this is the condition of the DSP who gave the order to shoot on September 8th.

Another video of the same incident was found on a Nepalese Facebook account. The caption of this video claimed that a DSP in Kathmandu had died. He was the one who had ordered to open fire during the protests. Angered protesting youths chased and beat him. They later took revenge by confirming his death.

Although no information about this video was found in Nepal’s mainstream media, the footage of this person being beaten was shown in a YouTube video by the Indian media outlet ABP Live. The same claim was made here, identifying the person as a DSP. Footage of the same incident is also available on a Nepalese Instagram account named vision_nepal01.

In Nepal, DSP stands for ‘Deputy Superintendent of Police’.

Chetana Kunwar, Assistant Fact-Check Editor at the Nepalese fact-checking organization Nepal Factcheck, told Rumor Scanner, “The identity of the police officer shown in the video is unknown. According to reports, three police officers have been listed as dead.” However, she could not confirm whether this individual was one of them.

Therefore, based on the overall evidence, it is confirmed that the video is not from Bangladesh.

Thus, a video from Nepal has been circulated with the false claim that an Awami League leader was recently beaten to death on the street in Bhola; which is completely false.
