Old Video from Nepal Shared as Scene of Recent Plane Crash in India

On June 12 (Thursday), a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India carrying 242 passengers crashed near Ahmedabad. Shortly after takeoff, the plane lost control and collided with a nearby building. Indian news outlets claimed that all passengers except one lost their lives. In this context, a video titled “Exclusive Clip from Inside the Plane During the Crash of the Indian Aircraft” has recently circulated on social media.

Fact-check

According to an investigation by the Rumor Scanner team, the video circulating as the recent scene of India’s plane crash is not recent. Rather, it is footage from just moments before the crash of Yeti Airlines Flight 691 in Nepal in 2023, which was recorded on a mobile phone by one of the passengers on board.

At the beginning of the investigation, an image reverse search from the video in question led to a video published on January 17, 2023, on the YouTube channel of the Singapore-based English news outlet CNA, titled “Nepal plane crash: Final moments of Yeti Airlines flight 691, filmed by a passenger on board”. The video matches the one being shared with the current claim.

Additionally, the same video was published on January 16, 2023, on the YouTube channel of Indian publication platform Mojo Story, titled “Nepal Plane Crash: Inside Video Shot By Indian Passenger As Yeti Airline Crashed In Pokhara”. The detailed description of the video mentions that on January 15, 2023, a Yeti Airlines flight crashed in Pokhara, Nepal.

Based on information from these two videos, a keyword search revealed a report published on the same date, January 16, 2023, on the website of The Business Standard, titled “Nepal: Video captures moment of fatal crash; Indian passenger’s FB Live” . The report states that a Yeti Airlines plane with 72 passengers crashed just minutes before landing in Pokhara, Nepal, killing at least 68 people. Among the 68 victims of Nepal’s worst air crash in three decades were five Indian citizens. One of the five Indian victims, Sonu Jaiswal, had live-streamed the tragic flight on Facebook.

In conclusion, the video has no connection to the June 12 crash of an Air India passenger plane in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.

Conclusion

Therefore, a video of the 2023 crash of a Yeti Airlines plane in Pokhara, Nepal, is being falsely circulated on social media as footage of a recent passenger plane crash in India, which is false.
