Video of internal conflict in Bangladesh promoted as scenes of Bangladeshis attacking in Assam, India

Recently, a video with the caption, “Illegal Bangladeshis in Assam’s Goalpara have armed themselves with handmade spears to violently attack officials and police” has been circulated on social media.

That is to say, the claim has been made that the people in the video are Bangladeshi citizens, armed with handmade spears, ready to attack police and officials in Goalpara, Assam, India.

Fact-check

Rumor Scanner’s investigation found that the circulated video is not from the Indian state of Assam. In fact, it is a video of a clash between two factions of the BNP in Abdullapur village, Austagram, Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh, in July this year.

In the investigation, a video titled “At least 40 injured in bloody clash between two factions of BNP in Austagram, looting and arson” was found on Channel I’s YouTube channel, published on 1 July. Scenes from this video match the scenes in the circulated video.

Video Comparison By Rumor Scanner 

From the description of that video, it is learned that on the morning of 1 July, in Abdullapur village of Khayerpur-Abdullapur Union in Austagram upazila of Kishoreganj, at least 40 people were injured in a bloody clash between two factions of the BNP. It is also reported that during the clash, there were allegations of vandalism, looting, and arson.

Following this lead, on the same date, a report titled 40 injured in bloody clash between two factions of BNP in Austagram was found published on the Dhaka Mail website. A photo included in that report also matches the scenes in the circulated video.

The Dhaka Mail report also provides the same information on the matter.

In other words, the circulated video is not from the Indian state of Assam.

Therefore, a video of a clash between two BNP groups in Austagram, Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh, in July this year, has been promoted as scenes of Bangladeshi citizens attacking in Assam, India — which is false.
