Myanmar Video Shared Claiming to Show an Earthquake in Russia

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s eastern coastal region. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was felt today (July 30) at 8:25 AM local time. In this context, a video has been circulated in the media claiming to show scenes of the earthquake in Russia. The footage shows a shelf collapsing inside a store during the quake.

Posts making such claims have been published by media outlets such as RTV (Facebook), Ekhon TV (YouTube), Jugantor (Facebook), Dainik Azadi (Facebook), and Khabar Songjog (Facebook).

Additionally, the video was seen being aired with similar claims in Indian media as well. See: NDTV.

Fact-check

Rumor Scanner’s investigation reveals that the circulated video does not depict today’s (July 30) earthquake on Russia’s eastern coast. Rather, it shows the earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 and is being falsely claimed otherwise.

A reverse image search of the viral video shows that the same footage was published on April 1 by the UK-based media outlet Daily Mail’s X account in a video post. Comparing that video with the one circulating today confirms they are the same. The X post described it as: “Shelves collapse in a Myanmar store during earthquake.”

The same video was also shared on March 30 by Eastern European media outlet NEXTA on their X account. The post stated: “This girl survived the earthquake at her workplace. The magnitude of the Myanmar earthquake reached 7.7 on the Richter scale. The number of casualties continues to rise. Experts say the death toll could be in the thousands – rescue operations are still ongoing.”

The same footage is also found on the Albanian-based news website Telegrafi, where it was shared as footage from the Myanmar earthquake.

Using the above clues, a keyword search also leads to a report published on March 28 on the UK-based BBC News website titled “Myanmar earthquake: What we know.” The report states, “On Friday, March 28, a massive earthquake devastated Myanmar. The 7.7 magnitude quake was also felt in Thailand and southwestern China… The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicentre was located 16 kilometres (10 miles) northwest of the city of Sagaing. It is near Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.5 million, and approximately 200 kilometres (125 miles) north of the capital, Naypyidaw.”

This confirms that the video is neither recent nor from Russia. It shows footage from the earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.

Conclusion

The video of the earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 is being circulated today (July 30) as if it shows the earthquake in Russia’s eastern coastal area. This is misleading.
