Fact-Check: Maxwell is not the Australia’s first double-century maker in ODIs

Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell played an unbeaten innings of 201 against Afghanistan in the group stage match of the ongoing ODI Cricket World Cup for men on November 7. The Rumor Scanner team has seen two clear claims circulating in the media regarding this.

Fact-Check

Research by the Rumor Scanner team revealed Glenn Maxwell became the first Australian male cricketer to score a double century in ODIs, but he was not the first Australian cricketer to achieve the feat. In 1997, Belinda Clark, a member of the Australian women’s national team, became the first Australian cricketer to score a double century at the World Cup.

According to a report published on February 24, 2010, on the website of the Indian media ‘India Today’, Australian cricketer Belinda Clark scored the first ODI double century in the Women’s World Cup match against Denmark in 1997.

According to sources found in this report of India Today, Belinda Clark’s double century can be confirmed in the detailed search of the match between Australia vs Denmark in Women’s ODI World Cup-1997 on ESPN Cricinfo, an international cricket media. He scored an unbeaten 229 in that match.

A tweet on 25 April 2020 by the International Cricket Council’s official X (formerly Twitter) account also revealed that Belinda Clark became the first cricketer to score a double century in ODI cricket.

In the report published on the official website of Cricket Australia on November 8, regarding Maxwell’s double century, Glenn Maxwell is not the first Australian cricketer to score 200 runs in ODIs. This record was first achieved in 1997 against Denmark by one of Australia’s greatest-ever cricketers, Belinda Clark.

Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell scored a double century against Afghanistan in the ongoing Men’s ODI World Cup. Media coverage of his achievement claimed Maxwell to be the first Australian cricketer to score a double century in ODIs and the highest ODI innings by an Australian batsman. However, according to the Rumor Scanner team, Belinda Clark achieved this feat as the first Australian cricketer in 1997. However, Glenn Maxwell became the first Australian male batter to score a double century. Moreover, naturally, Maxwell’s 201 is not the highest ODI innings by any Australian batsman. Belinda has the record of scoring 229 runs in that match in 1997.

So, the information circulating in the media claiming Glenn Maxwell as the first Australian cricketer to score a double century in ODI cricket is misleading.
