A video has recently been circulated on social media, falsely claiming to show a person being brutally beaten by several men in Bangladesh.
One handle shared the video on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “After Dr. Yunus seized power, Bangladesh became a terrifying state. He and his gang of goons are torturing the people.”

Fact-Check
Rumor Scanner’s investigation confirmed that the video is not from Bangladesh. The video is actually from an incident in West Bengal, India.
By performing a reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded by Union minister and Bengal BJP president Dr. Sukanta Majumdar on July 9, 2024, on his X account. In the caption, he wrote: “Absolutely appalled by the emerging video from Taltala Club, Kamarhati, showing Jayanta Singh, a close associate of TMC MLA Madan Mitra, brutally attacking a girl.” From his caption, it is confirmed that the video is from West Bengal, India. (Note: The person beaten in the video may not be a girl. In a press conference, the Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister of the state, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, stated, “The way misinformation has been spread by distorting gender identity is concerning…”)

Later, we conducted further searches and found several reports on the incident, which confirmed that the video is indeed from West Bengal, India. A report by Indian Express stated, “An old video has surfaced of a person being brutally assaulted, allegedly by the associates of a Trinamool Congress strongman inside a club in the Kamarhati area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, sparking political outrage.” Another report by The Hindu mentioned, “According to an officer of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, the video relates to an incident from March 2021, in a case involving the theft of a motorbike. The police added that the person beaten in the video may not be a woman.”
Therefore, a video of an old incident of brutal beating from West Bengal, India, has been falsely shared, claiming it to be a recent incident from Bangladesh. Thus, the claim in the post that the video is from Bangladesh, is false.
