Fact-Check

According to Rumor Scanner’s investigation, OceanGate has not posted any new advertisement for visiting the Titanic wreckage after the tragedy of submarine Titan, rather according to internet archives the advertisement was already on the website before the tragedy of Titan.

Misinformation in Mass Media Based on Old Advertisement

To verify the publication date of the information circulated in Oceangate’s new advertisement claiming to visit the Titanic wreckage after the destruction of the Titan, Rumor Scanner team copied the link of the Oceangate’s ‘Titanic Expedition – Explore the Titanic‘ webpage and searched on Internet Archive website archive.org.

An archived version of the website has been found there.

An analysis of this archived version shows that, according to information provided on the webpage, the Titanic Expedition at Oceangate is still underway in 2023.

On the other hand, 5 missions of the 2024 expedition are mentioned in the webpage. Among them, the first mission is scheduled from 9 May to 17 May 2024, the second mission from 18 May to 26 May 2024, the third mission from 27 May to 4 June, the fourth mission from 5 June to 13 June and the fifth mission from 14 June to 22 June 2024 on the webpage.

A further search later found another version of the same webpage on June 19 at archive.ph, another internet archive website.

According to information provided on this page, Oceangate’s Titanic Expedition is still ongoing in 2023. However, the 2024 expedition was changed to two missions, namely the first mission from June 12 to 20 and the second from June 21 to 29.

Another archived version of the same webpage later found on 22 June also mentions the same expedition.

On the other hand, according to media sources, on June 18, the submarine Titan went missing with five riders including the pilot on the way to see the wreckage of the Titanic ship at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Later, on June 22, after an extensive search of the ocean floor, rescuers reported finding the wreckage of the submarine.

That is, OceanGate’s advertisement for visiting Titanic existed on their website before the tragedy of the submarine Titan.

Besides, although the media claims the Oceangate advertisement is a new advertisement, the advertisement mentions a person named PH Nargeolet as the expedition’s content expert.

Investigation shows that PH Nargeolet was one of the five passengers of the submarine Titan that crashed recently while visiting the wreckage of the Titanic, who died in the accident.

This presence of PH Nargeolet in the Oceangate advertisement also proves that the advertisement is not new, it was already there on their website.

Basically, the submarine Titan of the US-based private company OceanGate dived with five passengers to show the underwater ship Titanic on June 18, but within the two and a half hour of the journey, the submarine lost contact with the control ship and disappeared with five passengers including the pilot. Later, on June 22, rescuers reported finding the wreckage of the submarine after an extensive search at the bottom of the ocean. But recently, information has been widely spread on the Internet by several media sources claiming that OceanGate has advertised to visit Titanic again. However, a search on the Internet Archive shows that the advertisement was found on the company’s website before the tragedy of the submarine Titan, and there is no record of OceanGate’s re-advertisement to visit Titanic after the tragedy of Titan.

Notably, in previous time, Rumor Scanner published a fact-check report identifying misinformation regarding Simpsons cartoon’s prediction on the tragedy of Titan.

So, the claim that OceanGate has re-advertised to visit Titanic is completely false.
