Multiple Fake AI‑Generated Images Spread Over the Uttara Plane Crash Incident

On July 21, at noon, in the Diabari area of Uttara in the capital City Dhaka, an F‑7 fighter jet of the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into a building of Milestone School & College. After the incident, at least seven different images spread on social media claiming to show the scene of the crashed fighter jet.

Fact‑Check

The investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the seven discussed images are not scenes of the fighter jet crash in Uttara. Rather, the images were created using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

In the investigation on this matter, it was found that the aircraft that crashed at Milestone College was an F‑7 fighter jet of the Bangladesh Air Force. Based on this information, after observing the seven discussed images, it is seen that they have several structural differences from the F‑7 fighter jet (1, 2).

In addition, in each of the seven images, the use of AI technology is seen. In the first image, the formation of fire and smoke is created unnaturally, which does not match reality. In the second image, besides the inconsistency of fire and smoke, the writing on the front of the ambulance is distorted, which is commonly seen in AI‑generated images. In the third image, an aircraft is seen hitting a tall building, but there is no such building at Milestone College. In the fourth image, debris of two aircrafts is seen, whereas in reality only one aircraft crashed there. In the fifth image, a Bangladeshi‑flagged aircraft is seen burning on the roof of a building with “Milestone School & College” written on it, but in this image too the formation of fire is abnormal. In the sixth image, in the English name of the school, the word “&” is used twice and the middle word “School” is missing. In the seventh image, spelling errors are seen in the English words “School” and “College,” which are often seen in AI‑generated images.

To be further sure of the matter, five of the images were tested on the AI‑content detection website Sightengine. In the analysis of the website, it is seen that for each image, there is a 99% probability of being AI‑generated.

Therefore, five images created with AI were spread claiming to show the scene of the fighter jet crash in Uttara, which is completely false.
