The Claim of Jackie Chan’s Death is False

Recently, information has been circulated on the social media platform Facebook claiming that action movie star Jackie Chan has passed away. The circulated post includes a composite image made of three pictures. One of these purports to be a photo of his deceased body, and another claims to be a picture taken in the hospital before his death. The third picture shows him in a normal state.

Fact-check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team has found that Jackie Chan has not died. In reality, a fake image of his deceased body was created with the help of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and combined with an old photo of him being treated in a hospital to promote the claim.

Since Jackie Chan is an international star, news of his death would naturally be reported by international media outlets. However, our investigation found no information regarding his death from international media or any other reliable sources.

A keyword search for information about Jackie Chan led to a report published on the official Olympics website on August 20. The report states that Jackie Chan recently visited the IOC (International Olympic Committee) headquarters at The Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland. A review of the verified Olympics Instagram account also found two videos of his visit. One video was posted on August 18, and another video was posted on August 19. In contrast, the post claiming his death was circulated on August 11.

Image Verification 1

Upon reviewing the purported image of his deceased body, Rumor Scanner noticed several inconsistencies indicative of AI generation. Abnormalities were observed in the finger structure of the body and the hands and faces of others present in the photo. To further confirm this, the image was tested on the AI content detection platform Hive Moderation, which showed a 99.9% probability that it was generated by AI.

This means the image of Jackie Chan’s supposed dead body circulated with the death claim was created using AI.

Image Verification 2

An investigation into the photo of Jackie Chan being treated in a hospital led to a post from May 4, 2020, on a Facebook page named “成龙 Jackie Chan – Armenia”. The post claims the photo was taken in September 1985, when he was seriously injured during the shooting of the movie “Armour of God” in Yugoslavia.

Following up on this information, a keyword search led to a report on the American entertainment news website Cinema Blend, published on October 26, 2017, titled “That Time Jackie Chan Almost Died On The Set Of One Of His Movies“. According to the report, the scene during which he was injured and nearly died required him to jump from a wall, grab onto a tall tree, and swing to the other side. Although the scene was captured on the first take, he wanted to do a second take. It was during this attempt that the tree branch broke, causing him to fall. As a result, he hit his head on a rock below, suffering a severe injury. The report also includes footage of that scene from the movie.

The same information was found in a report published by the international newspaper The Times.

Therefore, the claim that action movie star Jackie Chan has died is completely false.
