Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the magazine named The Week, which published the cover story titled “Destiny’s Child” about Tarique Rahman, is not the British publication but an Indian magazine of the same name. The story is being falsely attributed to the British edition.

During the investigation, Rumor Scanner found two Facebook posts by Mahdi Amin, adviser to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, and Faisal Mahmud, Press Minister at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, India. Mr. Mahdi attached the story as an image in his post. In the image, it is seen that it is the 04 May 2025 issue of the magazine named The Week. The story, written by a journalist named Namrata Biji Ahuja, also includes her own commentary. Mahdi did not clarify whether it is an Indian or British magazine. However, from Faisal Mahmud’s post, it is revealed that it is an Indian magazine. He also shared a picture of the same issue’s cover in his post.

Later, on Facebook, the same cover photo was found on the page of the magazine named The Week here. Analyzing this Facebook page shows that it is a Kerala-based Indian magazine. The page is controlled from India. According to the magazine’s LinkedIn profile, it is published by India’s Malayala Manorama Company Limited. Besides the corporate office in Kochi, it has bureau offices in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

Checking the author profile of Namrata Biji Ahuja on the magazine’s website confirms that she is the Delhi bureau chief of the magazine.

Thus, the story about Tarique Rahman was published in the magazine named The Week, which is not a British magazine.

However, there is a magazine based in the United Kingdom and the United States with the same name (The Week). Although the names are identical, there are differences between the two magazines in website addresses, ownership, and several other aspects. The confusion mainly arose because of the name similarity.

Conclusion

Thus, the story about Tarique Rahman published in the Indian magazine The Week has been falsely promoted as being published in the British magazine The Week, which is misleading.
